An Introduction to SHUJI TERAYAMA:
SHUJI TERAYAMA is a multi-disciplinary artist; novelist, poet, photographer, theatre director, visual artist, including film director. His works was extensively shown in public during 1960-1984. In the 60s, he found the theatre group TENJOU SAJIKI, which the name was from the Japanese title of the film THE CHILDREN OF PARADISE (1945) by MARCEL CARNE, his admired French film director. The style of terayama’s theatre works is avant-garde. He oftens mix traditional Japanese culture with unconventional stage design, costume design. Also his use of vivid lighting design was to increase the unusal atmosphere reflecting the traditional Japanese culture on the brink of Western civilization.

A Look at Material

Thai Student designer Napat Kongpornphatthana has an interesting
way of making, selecting a surprising combination of materials.
The red one is electrical wiring and the folded shape is tracing paper.
A nice example of a form study and a simple experiment. It was produced
as part of a project called visualising movement- the wavy line being the movement.
It provides a nice solution for a stand.

I met Richard Edkins from Environments Project at Dubsocial Bangkok last Friday. He passed me a postcard
that shows how himself and his partner are travelling and producing thought provoking images
on a long trip from Birmingham overland. The site is worth exploring for a while.
Environments explores themes of identity, histories, space and time. Recording and celebrating ‘the every day’

Its funny how circumstances and discussions can just shift
your attention to particular designers and their works. Two recent
examples that i am just beginning to investigate-after seeing One DotZero
selection in Bangkok (short videos) myself and some friends were impressed
by Hussein Chalayan's video. He is a Turkish British Fashion designer-the
name is familiar but I never saw what he produced. His website is full of
projects that have names like 'Compassion Fatigue' and he catches a stranger more dislocated side of us, either through clothes or moving image. When i meet architects that want to explore their ideas, it makes me think of Chalayan's Place to Passage video. Image top right.

Second little discovery (thanks to Maho and Tak) is YEAN
a group of people between Rotterdam, Vienna and Bordeaux that as far as i can see produce comprehensive books and documents about towns that do not yet exist. Example, picking up a book entitled 'Tirol City' by Cedric Ramiere and Claudia Staubmann it features a huge 280 pages with loving detail of a new urbanity in the Alps with shopping centres, a subway and 303,632 houses. You get a lovely map and breakdowns of the agriculture, settlement patterns road network..it continues. It is like a perfectly drafted book that any proud town would like to have. Yet it discusses the potential future of this busy tourist town-changing from village to city. It is an introduction I guess to Architectural studies and the huge amount of thrilling analysis that goes into new generation architecture.This is my initial understanding of it anyway. I could be horribly wrong!

I'm a fan of Lost, box sets are cheap in Bangkok, and producer
JJ Abrams has recently put the movie Cloverfield on our big
screens. Really enjoyed this movie, the sound is incredible, its shot
in first person-shaky camera and the plot ain't nuthin' new (godzilla
in Manhattan) but its a fun hour and a half. If you like that check out
the Korean blockbuster The Host. Great cast and monster action (2006 see still above)

“Ripe Project: the Village and Harvest Time” at Ardel Gallery, Bangkok
after featuring at the major art show Documenta in Kassel Germany.
A small rice harvest is made in the gardens of the gallery. Its quite
a beautiful sight and has had a big impact on Contemporary Art here.
Of course its as simple as it gets. This idea was also harvested in Germany.

Bangkok Bygone: General Post Office

The picture doesnt do it justice, but today I discovered yet
another building that confirms Bangkok city as the Gotham
of the East!. This ageing, crumbling General Post Building run
by Cat Telecom is a sight to behold. Imposing in size, with broken windows
and ornate demons on the roof, the interior as abuzz with
a large main hall and post being sorted. The clock is clouded
but working and it is a very dark and interesting structure.
No overhaul yet, but if the banks are anything to go by, the
government offices will get it soon.

A Walk in the City of London

The east side of London has its own district called,confusingly,

the City of London.It has its own police force. It is the financial district during the week

but on weekends is a ghost town. It also contains loads of fantastic old buildings

and some of the oldest remains of the city. Much was damaged in the Great

Fire of London but was then rebuilt 19th Century. I love walking around

here and was there on the 21st dec. It contains really weird buildings with

loads of character.

When I visited Mike Croft's house in Bang Saen, Thailand, last year i was impressed
at the sight of an artist at home. Thai ridgeback dogs circled
and jumped on tables with layers and layers of paint on them.
His semi outdoor studio with large paintings being worked on
simultaneously. He's from the UK, but there is plenty of SE Asia
to be found in his paintings that kind of draw me into them.
Mike is a colleague of mine at the School of Architecture and here
is some of his new work.

Mantratv is founded by SHIN Jin Sik, a Korean media artist,
and has broadcast on Manhattan Neighbourhood Network
since 1998. The aim is to produce TV programs to promote
public interest in art and music. Shin is an award winning
producer in 2000 and is also an author, artist and teacher.

I was lucky enough to spend time with him when he came
to Bangkok for the FRESH short film festival, which he co
curated. We are now joining with him as 'Dubsocial' at
Bangkok CODE in January. A kind of SOAD club, it will
be filmed on the night and edited into a 30 minute
programme about this Bangkok arts event.

So please come and support 12th January, 2008!

This beauty is the latest fixed-gear contraption
made by John French a self taught bike assembler
and astro physicist in Dublin, Ireland. I'm not making this up.
These stripped down city bikes were once the bastion
of inner city couriers but have now become popular
amongst anyone that wants to leave the car at home.
I am a big fan of this style of bike now and will be ordering
a custom one soon I hope!

The Coldcut gig at the new nearly opened 808 club
at the RCA, Bangkok. Big big crowd in as Katsue the local
electronic duo warmed us up. A bit of crowd banter would
have improved their set of 5 songs. nice sound though.
Highlight for me was NuMark who played a stunning
15 minute set with toys. A monkey with cymbals played
a central role here. and a teeny toy drum kit, throw in a Kaos
pad loaded with bells and jazz samples and you've got sonic mayhem
with beats. Coldcut were fun, but are unfortunately replaying
the same set as about 1 year ago when they played here last.
Same visuals (almost) too. Lost your voice lads?

The Sound of Hair Cutting

On the day of the celebration of the King's 60th,
I went over to the large open meeting place
known as Sanam Luang. As most people that
had travelled from outside the Capital were
lined up along the road all day in the heat

hoping to catch a glimpse of the Royal cavalcade.
Wandering around in the evening I came across
a strange sight- loads of hairdressers under marquees
in the open air giving free haircuts and shaves to anyone

that wanted/needed it. It was one of the greatest
examples of making merit that I have seen yet and
had everyone feeling and looking good on the country's
big day. The old and the young milled around here
waiting for their turn-there must have been about 60 hairdressers!

Yes Bill Hicks pointed it out in one of his rants and
it has always been true from my point of view when
it comes to ideas/products. There are always things that
need to be made right now and chances are that many many
people are thinking of that idea at exactly the same time.
I was surprised to see on core 77 today the separate release through
a website of a product-exactly the same
as one I was pushing from my sketchbook
into prototype-the napkin notebook (pictured).
My design was finally hand made (sept 07!) in a collaborative entry for a Muji competition and I guess it has a
different twist-it is city specific, the napkins are all from Barcelona
and particularly, famous architectural spots. A nod to the napkin sketch.

Dec 4th, the storming duo from Ninja Tune will
play a set, full visuals, at the pre-launch(?) of
a new club 808. Its at the old Astra venue. Support
from Dj Nu Mark of LA party hip hoppers Jurassic 5.
Coldcut released the unbeatable Journeys by DJ series
in the 90s and have since integrated their visual show
to match the beats.

I witnessed the excellent Herberts Dream which has played
over 400 times touring the world by a French Troupe. Using giant
inflatable jump suits on stilts and lights, the innocent story of big round creatures and balloons
gives a warm feeling inside! It terrifies kids though!

'Recognizing barriers in sustainable design'

The economy wants to expand. The economy wants to grow.
But this is in direct conflict with the environment. If you
manage to balance these then you forget about people and
society and thus you fall into the trap of globalisation.
Empowerment, identity and work accessibility leads to
well being.

As a practitioner we can encounter technical barriers, mindset
barriers etc. There is a crucial knowledge about how green
designers work together, rather than how good they are or
what their backgrounds are. If we can understand building
design codes and practices which have large scale teams
can we learn something to apply to product design. his team set out to
visit leading teams and examples of successful projects.

An example is Lightmetrics at Linz Design centre. A light
grid system that diffuses light and minimizes solar heat in
a large auditorium. Specially invented for the project.
Four Times Square (1999) is the first and largest building
that uses fuel cells. Double Skin Facade to stabilize temperature
fluctuation in Vancouver, Canada.

How does a team introduce 'risky' projects into the
market today? The model ended up looking like this.
Their team uses 'Relational Competency'.
Green leadership, Alignment/Alliance, Prospect of future collaboration.

Shared knowledge is where you begin as a big team, sitting down
with your engineers for example, compromising. Chances of
new ideas emerge from this. The work should be at the centre,
rather than the designer at the centre responsible for all work.
There should be at least two people who dedicated to green
practice. This is the catalyst that must not lose sight due to costing
or engineering.
In surveys of over 400 designers, the response about the importance
of green design was that, yes we believe it. But on studying their projects a huge gap existed in their own projects.

In his own work, life cycle is a main concept. In product design
it could be said that there is an over emphasis on installation and application steps. In creating specs for many beds
to be used, the foam factorys are throwing 1 tonne of foam away per day. In working with them from the beginning, ideas emerge. Ceramic factory moulds are used between 20-50 times then become refuse. In Thailand, agriculture and agro industrial annual waste is abundant-58,190,000 tons. Rice straw, palm oil, corn, soybean, Bagasse (residue from sugar cane).
An example of his innovation in material research is to replace stone tiling with buttons for terraces in housing projects. Buttons come from a high quality resin scrap.
An area that needs to be addressed is adding to a database of material research, funding and testing. Technical networks need to be expanded and are a crucial part of the Green design practice.

additional thought-will product design ever have energy auditing services for the furniture industry? At Kasetsart there is a group called 'Scrap Lab' that aim to work with manufacturers to develop alternative
uses for their waste.

Invite 45 top class international and Thai photographers and assign them assistants
and locations around the country for 1 month. Then pick the best. It shows the
progression from early morning first light into the different lives and jobs of the people. There are two outstanding subjects that i remember-Fr Mike that cares for Aids sufferers in Lop Buri and the fishermen that collect coveted and valuable bird spit from steep caves near Krabi.
A real hard hitting collection of colours, angles, subjects and techniques all make
for a good cultural trip! Spot the Pink Man in the Hall of Frames!

I just discovered these. You can download brushes
for photoshop now. This high quality 'smoke' one
is just one click of the brush. Does this mean
that the secrecy of graphic design is now blown
open?Instant graphics from a vending machine?
Just like once web design was a mystery

I guess its not a bad thing. It follows the progression
of the likes of SketchUp which has introduced
a basic 3 D environment to new users. Expect changes.

Mean Streets!

Remember when you were young? Did you draw? I did.
A lot. One memorable time was a street art competition
during the Galway Arts Festival In blazing sunshine
loads of kids lined the narrow streets in the city and drew
their best piece in chalk on the road. So much fun.
Brooklyn based graffiti artist Ellis Gallagher uses chalk to draw
around shadows of objects in the city of NY. He's been picked
up before for it by the cops, but let off with a caution. He's also
lectured about graffiti as art. Basically he likes these sketches.
They rock.
New Yorks a changin' though. Kid Natalie Shea, who also likes
chalk was reported for her pavement sketches, and the city issued
a stern warning letter against graffiti to her, with threat of a $300
fine?!! Their policy-it doesnt matter what the material is, if it
contains words and pictures, its illegal! Natalie's famly claimed
her work is usually better, this time she tried out some abstract stuff!!

This is the most recent version of the OLPC to hit Thailand in small numbers, Currently 80 of the B2 versions are distributed in a small pilot test near the National Park Kao Yai, 2 hours from Bangkok.They arrived in October and will stay with the primary school children for 2 years. I had the chance to try out this up to date version at NECTEC, a governmental office specialising in technology and programming.

A round up of who did what at the Creativity Unfold Seminar, Bangkok.

This was a 3 day event, I checked out Friday and Sunday. friday morning started
with a 'futurologist' (clench teeth..) who was a Danish dude kind of like the guy
from the werther's originals ad telling us about this little place known as the future.
Directly contradicting him on Sunday was the excellent Gijs Bakker (Droog) who claimed
in a non aggressive way that the future is not something we foresee but something that is
done today now together. today, now, together. I like that. He had a real hippy way about
him and as a jewellery designer for nearly 40 years, he is the calmest speaker. In a very
Dutch way the examples he showed featured male genitalia (the daily cycles of men to be hung
round the neck) . His talk was themed around 5 areas-use it again/familiar and not so familiar/
form follows process/body language and ancestry. The form follows process one was explained
thus: dude makes software to simulate the growth process of bones. other dude feed data about
a seat of a chair and a backrest into the software. software designs chair based on how bones
grow. seriously cool stuff.
Actually, many were in awe of rapid prototyping and more dramatically-software making decisions. Ok Dave. i have the word 'Orani Enbaum' written in my notes, but I'm
not sure what it means yet.

Also on Friday I listened to the tail end of Matteo de Montezemolo of..wait for it..
'Charme investments'!! Would you buy a used car from a company called Charme
Investments? He was a cocky young Italian high on investment banking and a grandson
of Fiat owners, and was spouting aggressive rubbish about furniture and Dubai. I got
the impression he was like a young Lex luther and left promptly. The highlight of a very
businessy Friday was Dr Peter Zec a nice tall German in a white suit. He gave a good case
study about Apple pricing. Easy target but relevant I guess. We all sat up and paid attention
to economics for a while. Reality check. Main point of why designers have jobs: Content needs
form. Simply put. Great after party, chang beer and sushi and lots of laughing due to various
incidents that night..

Sunday was jammed. Thoroughly enjoyed the two Thai speakers, I had my translation
headset on. Thanonchai Sornsrivichai a Thai TV commercial director being named the Most Awarded Director by Gunn Report gave an alternative talk. Kind of shuffled on
all indie and hip with a beard and showed his extremely funny ads that observe the
normal/weirder side of Thai society. We laughed a lot. His closing comment led on from
a Buddhism point of view. How do you relax, somebody asked. He answered, well all of
you sitting out there, you're all going to die anyway. This building will crumble. And any client
that disagrees with me, he's going to die eventually as well. All said with a wry smile.
Secondly Pen-ek Ratanaruang one of the most internationally recognised Thai filmmakers and a rebellious thinker. Director of Ploy(don't bother) and Last Life in the Universe(must see).
His theme was Grief and Inspiration. He selected short clips about heartbreak, death, suicide
and riffed in between .A lovely honest opinion came from him. He's quite a speaker, not
gripping just good company. Cool clips and a morbid speech about the dignity and restraint
of funerals. He ran way over time. Stefan Sagmeisters time. But the crowd were on the
edge of their seats for the whole thing. I'm glad I was there.

Then onto a hero Sagmeister studio. Standing tall and Austrian he had a long wait and
was in Bangkok for 3 days before. A buddy of mine had a cigar with him and was plied
for information about the city, education and society. Didnt actually make much notes here
just kind of laid the pen to one side and let it all wash over me. His topics were
organised around his studios decision to do these jobs:
design for music
socially responsible design
corporate design
design for art
we are the authors

recommendations by him: two books 'World Changing. a users guide to the 21st century'
and Edward de Bono 'Thinking course'. It was all lovely. Great projects and inspiration.

Where I'm At

It is the end of the semester 1 at the School of Architecture and Design.
It is the beginning of Bangkok Design Week. A first attempt to string
together different events and sponsors and generate a buzz. Unfortunately
the hub of all this activity is a big glitzy shopping centre. Why, Bangkok, Why!

Anyway, musn't complain. I am lucky enough to be attending Peter Zec (REd Dot),
Droog, Stefan Sagmeister(yay), Pen Ek (thai Film director) talks on Friday and
Sunday at the Thailand Creative Design Centre, a lovely venue (in a shopping centre).

I also had an article published in Art4D magazine here slap bang beside the editorial page.
It is good timing and features work developed by a 3rd Yr design studio run by 3 of us.
Good exposure for the school.

Next Monday I will head to Nakhon Nayok where 80 of the oLPC laptops are being
distributed to a school in that province. Going to check out and meet those involved.
history in the making? Only time will tell..

New logo

This is a logo that I have just designed for an automated telescope
project developed at University College Dublin, Ireland.
Funded by UCD and the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology, Watcher is operated in collaboration with physicists at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
The telescope,which has been built in Boyden Observatory,South Africa, records Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs)
GRBs are immensely powerful bursts of high-energy radiation that can occur when a star collapses. They are by far the most brilliant sources in the universe and occur roughly once per day and can last from about 30 milliseconds to one thousand seconds.
There will also be a website which i'll post the links to soon.
Here's some of the info that helped to develop the final logo.

.Over the course of a few hours the an image is recorded as
it fades. This image happened 12billion years ago, in the early days

in the sky again. A GRB is best represented as a flash of light in the
sky (since that's all it looks like to us humans).

MAUVE the world’s first artificial dye was invented accidentally by
18 year-old chemistry student William Perkins. Up until then, all dyes
and paints were coloured by natural methods like plants and roots.
These colours were unpredictable and prone to fading. The discovery
in 1856 of the solid and synthetic mauve revolutionised fashion and dye-
making on the streets of London. It also opened up a new commercial
market for chemical applications which now could crossover into the
mainstream. Perfume, photography and ammunitions all benefited
as a result. A hard impact from a soft colour.

Spooning Couple, Hands showing scale

This is one of my most memorable or unforgettable
times seeing art in London. In the National Gallery London,
Ron Muecks oversize sculpture- an 8ft hyper real human
doing normal things, standing, eyes closed, thinking,pregnant.
It is a strange feeling to stand so close and see the detail
but also to feel what it is to be human. This Australian
artist discovered that photography just doesnt do his
pieces justice and I believe that after experiencing his sculpture.
This website keeps track of his exhibitions (mostly Stateside
i'm afraid) The movie below shows his making process and
some of the metaphors he used for the exhibition in London

These photos were taken in 2001 when i was a part time delivery 'boy'
for Oddbins off licence. Top, the Gherkin, a great view of Norman Fosters
building. The surrounding buildings are so nice. And the second pic is
a square near Moorgate Station. This is a hidden gem, at the weekends
no tourists visit this side of town

I realised that I dont put enough Thailand related stories
up on the blog so here is one from today's Nation newspaper

This is the Giant Swing,a structure which has stood in the
capital since 1784. It was erected to remind people to be cautious
by King Rama I. In Buddhist Brahmin belief, after Brahma created the
earth,he invited the god Shiva to test its strength. The test
involved two big mountains which are represented by the two
poles of the Swing.
The logs were made from teakwood trees from Phrae province in the
North. Here's the science fiction part-It was announced today that the
DNA signature of the teak logs has been successfully extracted and
will be used to grow one million trees to be distributed free to the
public!! What an amazing idea!

The ever evolving Noo Yawk graphic designer is coming to town!
As part of the Creativity Unfolds meet in Bangkok, he will speak
on Sunday 14th October at 5.30 PM gallery TCDC. Variously shocking throughout
his career so far, the Austrian born poses excellent and troubling
questions such as How long is the human tongue? Does self-mutilation
leave scars? And can design touch someones heart? Check out his fun
'Made you Look' book. Its very entertaining.
