An Introduction to SHUJI TERAYAMA:
SHUJI TERAYAMA is a multi-disciplinary artist; novelist, poet, photographer, theatre director, visual artist, including film director. His works was extensively shown in public during 1960-1984. In the 60s, he found the theatre group TENJOU SAJIKI, which the name was from the Japanese title of the film THE CHILDREN OF PARADISE (1945) by MARCEL CARNE, his admired French film director. The style of terayama’s theatre works is avant-garde. He oftens mix traditional Japanese culture with unconventional stage design, costume design. Also his use of vivid lighting design was to increase the unusal atmosphere reflecting the traditional Japanese culture on the brink of Western civilization.
